Those new to this position may begin training by assisting more experienced installers in the installation or removal of carpet. As carpet installers gain experience, they may be assigned more advanced responsibilities, such as cutting and fitting carpet.Complete an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship programs can offer you the opportunity to earn money while you learn the trade. These structured programs can take 2-3 years to complete and allow you to gain hands-on experience using occupational tools while working under experienced professionals. Such programs may be offered through carpet retailers, flooring contractors, unions or industry associations.Get in good physical condition. The BLS notes that this profession requires a lot of bending and kneeling. Carpet installation also requires that you have the physical strength needed to lift and move heavy carpeting.
